Dalma Cartagena's Open House Slow Food Terra Madre fund raising event March 23, 2014
On March 23, 2014; Dalma Cartagena, her organic agriculture students; parents, and community members held a fund raising event to send (2) students to Europe. Today they were able to raise $580.00, which brings a total of $1,805.00. They will be an observer at the 2014 Slow Food Salone del Gusto / Terra Madre event. Dalma and her students will travel to Torino, Italy; and represent Puerto Rico as an delegate of this worldwide gathering for organic local foods. This international gathering of chefs, organizers, local food advocates, teachers, organic farmers & producers; begins Oct.23 - 27, 2014. Julitza Nieves was also selected as a delegate, also sell her amazing am products. ( http://salonedelgustoterramadre.slowfood.com/ ).
For many years, Dalma has taught young students the art of organic farming; at the S.U. Botijas School in Orocovis. She has dedicated her adult career, to educating and sharing the knowledge of organic agriculture to Puerto Ricans. Her work is truly inspirational, because she not only teach young students at the school; they have developed a small farm and cooking facility. Hopefully, Slow Food International will have Dalma's students showcase their incredible garden to this international organic food community. This opportunity to expose young minds, to a global farmers market; can be life changing for their spirit.
Dalma's work with our future organic farmers, is so critical to our humanity, especially in the age of genetic foods. She is so very fortunate to be surrounded with so much hope and optimism each day. For those who haven't yet seen Dalma's school garden project in person, here's a sample video of their amazing accomplishments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iXm2KpFFrI
