Yesterday, I received a call from a dear friend in PR who wanted to contribute to the 1,000 Garden in Africa program. With her generous donation, our grand total is $ 1,248.00. The 1,000 Garden program recommends a donation of 900 EUROs . Last night, I notice if you convert 900 EURO's into dollars, it comes out to $1,247.95. This coincidence was completely amazing.
We decided to support the Ayuub garden project in Somalia. However, because of the recession and lost of employment we ( my husband, my child and I) have dedicated ourselves to live from the land these past 3 years. It has been tough, other than the harsh weather, there exist a lack of knowledge of organic and sustainable agriculture. Our practices have been trial and error and we still manage to survive and compete with bigger companies. This made us realize that the only way organic farming is going to flourish in Puerto Rico is through coop operation with other farmer, dedication and sustainability. We have accomplished being the first certified organic farm in P.R. for now , our next step it to be completely sustainable.

Our future plans is to educated farmers to work together for a better future and to not depend on external outputs. Lot of family farms are struggling in P. R., because of the lack of knowledge, inputs and competitiveness with other farmers. In the past 8 years there have been only a handful of "organic farmers" and only one market on the island, now there are over 150 "organic" farmers, 3 "organic" CSA , 5 Markets and 3 major chains of supermarkets that are willing to buy local and organic. This clearly shows the interest in organic produce, however not one of these farmers are certified organic and lack basic marketing knowledge, even with the high demand on the island these farmers would need to be organized to fulfill these needs, being careful not to misuse our natural resources.

Our goal is to demonstrate to these farmers that you can live off the land, we plan to be the first completely sustainable farm on island and maybe even the Caribbean. I know our plans my seem ambitious, however it is extremely important that the our little learn the value of local fresh food. It shames me to say that our Island imports 80% of its food ( most vegetables and fruit are not even in conditions to be eaten and the pricing are to high even for a working class family). I feel deeply for the elderly and young mothers that struggle with the poor quality of food that there is available. Our Island can produce so much much more quality and quantity that whatever is offered in the supermarket.

I apologize for such a long e-mail. The list of concerns and problem are endless on the island.. However, I have so much faith that families can live a better life, eat better and live together without any grief. As a farmer I see ( high valued) food going to waste ( example coconuts, mango's etc) everyday. I have already explained my thoughts and goals. I 'am a new member of slow food, so I dare to ask of help or ideas to reach these goals. Any ideas would be of great help, I also a volunteer and memeber in a small "organic" market in Rincon and I wish to motivate the farmers towards sustainable agriculture.

Slow Food Boricua: Terra Madre 2012 contest rules

1. INTRODUCTION. By entering this Contest, entrants agree to abide by all terms of these Official Contest Rules and the decisions of Slow Food Boricua (“Contest Administrator”) and Sponsor(s), whose decisions shall be final and binding. Julio Vallejo and Raul Rosado donated plants for the garden. Jose Rivera donated seeds of yuca, malanga and ginger. Some others were bought with the money you donated to the project. Many seeds like tomatoes, pepper, aji, cilantrillo, beans, guanabana, calabaza, pepinillo, lechuga del pais, papaya, okra seeds, were prepared for the greenhouse. Slow Food International donated 50 comic book copies of " The Guardians of Biodiversity".
Julito Vallejo made the contact to bring compost from the University of Puerto Rico. Ivan Quintero and Alberto Tirado help to reorganize the greenhouse with the intermediate school students and their teachers; Raul Rosado, Julito Vallejo and Jose Rivera were in the garden with the little ones and their teachers; Anita Mattos shared her magic and love of composting with students from grades 4th-6th and their teachers. These wonderful teachers were able to transform hard exhausting work into fun educational play. At the end, many kids wanted to continue ranking leaves and shoveling dirt. Some of the children's parents, headed by Danny, Santos and Olga, and people from the community were key elements in developing the upkeep of the garden. In fact, they will continue helping the farmers restore the beauty of the Loaizo Cordero School's Children Garden.

Aug. 7, 2010 School Garden Fundraiser

Thank you very much for attending Aug.7, 2010; fundraiser at the Old San Juan Market. They were able to experience how sound patterns and food, produces a tremendous healing process in the human body.

Since last month Slow Food Boricua’s live food and healing sounds extravaganza meal. We received many demands, and decided to present Part II of the Slow Food as Medicine community dinner, on September 5, 2010. This time, we have focus on the tremendous healing power of yoga ( Alei & Broiny), the artsy of bodywork ( Bartus); plus deliciously prepared food combinations. We learned how to relax the body, mind and spirit with the stimulating techniques of yoga & shiatsu massage. Along with energetic & nutritional cultural food, this event surely awaken our inner creative soul and curious taste buds. Elizama Montalvo shared her knowledge of Food as Medicine throughout the event. Since these Slow Food dinners are community oriented, 30+ people contribute their most tasty and challenging dish ( drink) to the event. No no no!!!!

Potassium bromate (KBrO3) is an oxidizing agent that has been used as a food additive, mainly in the bread-making process. Although adverse effects are not evident in animals fed bread-based diets made from flour treated with KBrO3, the agent is carcinogenic in rats and nephrotoxic in both man and experimental animals when given orally. It has been demonstrated that KBrO3 induces renal cell tumors, mesotheliomas of the peritoneum, and follicular cell tumors of the thyroid. In addition, experiments aimed at elucidating the mode of carcinogenic action have revealed that KBrO3 is a complete carcinogen, possessing both initiating and promoting activities for rat renal tumorigenesis. However, the potential seems to be weak in mice and hamsters. In contrast to its weak mutagenic activity in microbial assays, KBrO3 showed relatively strong potential inducing chromosome aberrations both in vitro and in vivo. Glutathione and cysteine degrade KBrO3 in vitro; in turn, the KBrO3 has inhibitory effects on inducing lipid peroxidation in the rat kidney. Active oxygen radicals generated from KBrO3 were implicated in its toxic and carcinogenic effects, especially because KBrO3 produced 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the rat kidney. A wide range of data from applications of various analytical methods are now available for risk assessment purposes.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://slowfoodboricua.blogspot.com/2010/07/potassium-bromate-in-bread-no-no-no.html' title='Potassium Bromate in Bread... Elizama discovered that 12/12/09 had healing properties in the Universe (please read below the specific of 12/12/09). Considering the purpose and goals that Slow Food International wanted to achieve, around the world,December 12, 2009 was the perfect day to celebrate global harmony. Before the event, SFB planted a small tree to symbolize the growth and welfare of future generations. Dear friends began to arrive at Green is Zen, the home of Slow Food Boricua President, Elizama Montalvo, M.D. Each guest prepared a dish from a traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. Zeneida prepared Azopao de Gandules, Angela & Abdiel made a yummy green salad, Elizama cooked Arroz con Gandules, Guineitos en Escabache, Batatas en Alimibar, and Pasteles ( vegetarian), Anabis & Dorita gathered fruits, hummus ( pita), juice, Lolin & Arturo amazed everyone with Ensalada de Name, and Elisa and Matt bought over orange & passion fruit juice. Before we enjoyed this wonderful vegetarian meal, we decided to stroll into the forest and capture the essence of the day. Along the way, we came across a herd of horse and a family of goats. Finally on route, we discovered an enchanted hidden river. To bring closure to our Terra Madre Day, we sat, ate, and shared the delight of friendship. Hopefully we can continue the work and mission of many communities around the world, especially those in the Slow Food network.

12/12/09 is THE HIGHEST energy wave released to Earth, in all time, ever before.
This energy wave is a Cosmic Burst of Love pouring into the hearts of
every man woman and child.
It is in this Cosmic Burst of Love that the core issues will be
healed, hearts will open up,
old programs will drop, and the merkiva in the crown and the merkiva
in the heart will be
in hyperdrive, receiving new coding for what is to happen next.
The Cosmic Burst of Love pulsing through the firmament crystal
tetrahedron core of each Planet in our Solar system,
through Earths core, and into each and every one of our hearts, will
be a giant wave of energy, washing over everything
You will feel so washed over in love, bliss, and joy,

This 12/12/09, the center of the three portals, is for Group collectives.
On 12/12/09, the focus for Earth is, all of the Groups that have been
working together in the past will in some way change.
If the Group has been working for the Highest Good of All, it will be
given a boost, abundance, new ways of Being More.
WIth the sudden increase in abundance to the Planet, and the
sudden increase in Light, new things will be possible, things that
were never possible before.
This will all happen with the support of the Cosmic Burst of Love.

What this all means is if you have a dream for Terra Nova (Mother
Earth), 12/12/09 is the day of Manifestation of Group Work.
Consider your heart's desire, and be ready on 12:12 to put it into
play. Located in Montellano, also known as the "rainforest of the south", in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Green minds and hearts gathered on this magical day to share in delicious variety of vegan and organic dishes, desserts and healthy, luscious drinks. The 4 friendly dogs, guardians of the mountain retreat, gave the first welcome. The day began with an invigorating tropical rain fall, which the first two guests, along with our hosts, enjoyed in bathing suits! Emanuel's inner child spoke out to play in the rain, and so they did. As the heavenly waters purified each one, a small tour of the property, with various fruit and medicinal trees, small creeks, and a rock sculpture were seen. The rests of the guests arrived just in time as the drenched explorers dried off! They each brought smiles and a special dish to share including: Borscha Russian soup (brought by Elizabeth of Yoga Shala and husband Roberto), Mofongo balls (by Emanuel of Ondauraul Studio), Basmati Rice, aduki beans, "Green is Zen" avocados and passion fruit juice, and squash with cream of cashew soup ( Elizama), potato salad and "surprisingly good" avocado shake (Angela of SFB), salad and organic fair trade cocao and coconut balls (Silka of Mercado Ecologico de Ponce), Alberjas majadas ( Jorge, yoga instructor in Ponce, and wife Lucero), Pasteles organicos/vegans (Nelson of Finca Ecologica El Tazumal), Pesto potatoes and Pasta (Paca), Fruit Drinks (Carlo), a vegan coconut, chocolate pie (Bartus), and biodegradable utensils, plates, and cups from the La Chiwinha store in San Juan. The atmosphere was livened with the innocence, laughter, and games of Elizabeth's two little ones. Old and new friends shared in the relaxed atmosphere, making it fertile ground for flourishment of creative ideas for the present and future of el Mercado Ecologico, and other projects. Metamusic CD played in the background while Nelson enlightened us in the importance of organic farming. Tarot readings ( Angela's ancient wisdom) were also enjoyed on this night of many surprises.
Shooting stars in the night's sky ended a beautiful, yet fleeting day, which has nonetheless touched us all, who shared in each other's company, and motivated us to keep working as a community in the worthy ideals to create a healthier people and planet;)
Thank you to all who participated, and lets do it again soon!

Yoseline Mercado Santiago has moved on from Boricua- Slow Food; to pursue personal goals.

<a
