On September 3, 2010, the Loaizo Cordero School's staff members and children, Slow Food Boricua and an amazing all-star cast of Puerto Rico's finest agriculturist; assembled to resurrect their school 's children garden. Julio Vallejo and Raul Rosado donated plants for the garden. Jose Rivera donated seeds of yuca, malanga and ginger. Some others were bought with the money you donated to the project. Many seeds like tomatoes, pepper, aji, cilantrillo, beans, guanabana, calabaza, pepinillo, lechuga del pais, papaya, okra seeds, were prepared for the greenhouse. Slow Food International donated 50 comic book copies of " The Guardians of Biodiversity".
Julito Vallejo made the contact to bring compost from the University of Puerto Rico. Ivan Quintero and Alberto Tirado help to reorganize the greenhouse with the intermediate school students and their teachers; Raul Rosado, Julito Vallejo and Jose Rivera were in the garden with the little ones and their teachers; Anita Mattos shared her magic and love of composting with students from grades 4th-6th and their teachers. These wonderful teachers were able to transform hard exhausting work into fun educational play. At the end, many kids wanted to continue ranking leaves and shoveling dirt. Some of the children's parents, headed by Danny, Santos and Olga, and people from the community were key elements in developing the upkeep of the garden. In fact, they will continue helping the farmers restore the beauty of the Loaizo Cordero School's Children Garden.
